From First-Time Host to Community Leader

CINCINNATI, OH — This July, Lucky Lee marks two transformative years as the driving force behind Wordplay Thursday (WPT)—the open mic she courageously launched and lovingly nurtured into one of Cincinnati’s premier poetry events.

A Leap of Faith

“I never planned to be a host,” Lucky admits, recalling the night a friend nudged her to fill a midweek void at Japp’s. “I knew nothing about running a poetry night, but my friends believed in me. I thought, ‘Worst case, I try once and walk away.’ Instead, the room was packed, and I was hooked.”

Thanks to early tips from mentor Ty—and a spark of confidence—Lucky transformed that single experiment into a monthly ritual of raw vulnerability and creative energy.

From Japp’s to Gallery Off Vine

Without skipping a single month, Lucky steered WPT from its humble beginnings at Japp’s to a residency at Somerset and now to the speakeasy-chic Gallery Off Vine in the historic William Francis Theater. Each move brought larger crowds, richer lineups, and deeper connections.

“WPT isn’t just an open mic,” she says. “It’s a circle of trust. Poets show up with their full selves, and we hold space for every story.”

Spotlight on Talent

Under Lucky’s guidance, WPT has showcased Ohio’s Poet Laureates, National Slam Champions, and emerging voices discovering their power onstage. DPS co-founder Nick “Fury” Blackburn credits Lucky:

“She built this community from the ground up. Every month, WPT feels like home—and that’s her gift.”
